Genius Sports will power the Premier League's semi-automated offside technology.
In an effort to enhance offside decision-making, the Premier League has selected Genius Sports Limited as its Semi-Automated Officiating (SAOT) supplier.
Every Premier League stadium will have the system installed, which is anticipated to be operational for the 2024–2025 season and is driven by Genius Sports’ AI and analytics platform GeniusIQ.
In a few of seconds, the GeniusIQ platform uses computer vision cameras to provide complete 3D models of every player, the ball, and the offside line. This technique is intended to decrease game disruptions by improving the speed and precision of offside determinations.
The Premier League hopes that this technology will guarantee consistent offside line application and drastically reduce the amount of time needed for offside rulings.
"The implementation of semi-automated offside is a crucial step to preserve the flow of the Premier League game," said Tony Scholes, Chief Football Officer of the Premier League. We are certain that a consistent application of the offside lines and a significant reduction in the time required for offside determinations will result from the use of the most recent and precise technology available.
"I am delighted that Genius Sports is now the Premier League's Semi-Automated Officiating supplier," said Mark Locke, CEO of Genius Sports. As we introduce our exclusive AI and data platform, GeniusIQ, to the most watched league in the world, this is a game-changing moment for our company.
The Premier League Data Zone, which provides real-time tracking insights and statistics, is powered by Genius Sports, which has a history of supplying the Premier League with data and technological services. Their current collaboration, which includes all 20 Premier League teams using their AI-powered analytics, is extended by this new arrangement.
The SAOT method was announced in response to Genius Sports' Q1 2024 sales report, which showed a 23% increase to $119.7 million. Additionally, the business has partnered with Brentford FC to deliver AI-powered in-game highlights and has obtained exclusive betting rights with Football DataCo through 2029.
